Our History
In 1973, the First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa agreed to give top priority to an outreach program that would culminate in the building and operation of a senior citizen's complex with graduated social and medical care affordable for senior citizens of Ottawa Carleton.
In 1975 the house was incorporated. It took a decade of planning, acquiring additional property, and making applications to various governmental offices before sod was turned on March 27, 1983. The first residents moved in in the spring of 1984. Additions have been made to the residence in 1986 and again in 1996, adding a wheelchair shower stall and whirlpool bath, and a recreation room and more personal care units.
Unitarian House consists of 24 two-bedroom apartments, 43 one-bedroom apartments, and on the second floor we have 40 one-bedroom suites and 5 two-room suites. Six apartments have been designed to accommodate people in wheelchairs.
Unitarian House is a closely knit community of seniors, volunteers and staff with a full compliment of programs. The house includes people of all religious backgrounds and shares grounds in a lovely campus with First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa.
